How to light a majlis

A majlis is the heart of hospitality: a room for long conversations, coffee and family gatherings that run late into the evening. Its lighting should feel as generous as the welcome. Here is how to get it right.

Start with warmth

Choose warm light, around 2700K, throughout the room. It flatters skin, rich fabrics and wood, and it feels relaxed rather than clinical. Cool white light can make even a beautifully furnished majlis feel like an office.

Light in layers, not from one point

A single bright ceiling light flattens a room and creates glare. Instead, combine three layers: soft general light from above, lamps at seated eye level on consoles and side tables, and a few accent pieces that add a gentle glow to corners and shelves.

Place lamps where people sit

Table lamps on consoles behind or beside the seating put light exactly where conversations happen. Sculptural lamps also become part of the décor, so choose shapes and materials that suit the room: brass, glass and wood all feel at home in a majlis.

Keep it dimmable

Gatherings change through the evening. Dimmable and touch-controlled lamps let you move from bright, lively light when guests arrive to a softer glow as the night goes on.

Add scent and atmosphere

A candle warmer lamp brings fragrance to the room without an open flame, and doubles as a warm accent light. It is a quiet way to make a majlis feel even more welcoming.
