Two lamps can be equally bright and still make a room feel completely different. The difference is colour temperature, measured in kelvin (K). Understanding it is the simplest way to make your home feel calmer.
What the numbers mean
- 2700K and below: warm white. A soft, golden light similar to a traditional bulb or candlelight. Relaxing and flattering.
- 3000K to 4000K: neutral white. Clean and balanced, good for kitchens and bathrooms.
- 5000K and above: cool white. Crisp and bluish, like daylight. Useful for detailed tasks, but can feel harsh at home.
Warm light for living and resting
Living rooms, bedrooms and the majlis are places to relax, so warm light suits them best. It makes skin, fabrics and wood look their best and helps the room feel calm in the evening.
Neutral or cool light for tasks
Where you need to see detail, such as a kitchen counter, a vanity mirror or a craft table, neutral light can help. Even here, many people prefer a warmer tone in the evening.
Why evening light matters
Bright, cool light late at night can make it harder to wind down. Switching to warm, dimmer lamps after sunset is one of the easiest ways to make evenings feel more restful.
